Gov. Jan Brewer's Remarks at Dignitary Breakfast

Gov. Jan Brewer's Remarks at Dignitary Breakfast

Thank you, Mayor Fernau (Fur-No).

Good morning -- and Happy 4th of July to you all.

I cannot think of a better place to be -- as we celebrate America's independence -- than Show Low, Arizona.

How much more American can you get than to be in a place named for a card game?

And how fortunate we are that C.E. Cooley and Marion Clark chose to settle their dispute with something called -- "show-low."

Otherwise, we might be standing here in a place called … Rock-Paper-Scissors.

But, I wanted to be with you on this special day - I wanted to come here -- to the of heart of Arizona -- to talk about freedom.

When I became Governor, I pledged to you that freedom would be my guide in service to Arizona - freedom to work and earn a living - freedom to build a business - freedom to choose schools for your children -- freedom to be safe in your homes - and, yes - freedom from financial crisis.

But the Legislature ignored my requests to send me a budget that preserved these freedoms.

Instead, it waited till the 11th hour and then handed the people of Arizona a budget that turned its back on our future - especially K-12 education.

That is why I have carefully chosen to line-item veto certain portions of the legislation - allowing me to provide funds for vital services and public safety.

Basic government services continue to function.

But improvements - especially in education funding -- require more legislative work.

So, I have called the legislators back to their desks on Monday.

I ask that they get it right this time.

And - speaking of getting it right - I want to thank you, Rick, for standing with us, along with the Show Low Chamber of Commerce -- Gordon Kearl (Curl) -- and Pinetop-Lakeside Mayor Luke Smith.

As Governor, I can tell you, I intend to see this through until we have achieved what I have long advocated -- a prudent budget that neither over-spends nor under-funds.

I do not intend to let partisan politics or personal agendas get in the way of this mission.

Our freedoms today remain strong because we made the right choices for Arizona.

I can tell you that on this special day, and as long as I am Governor, you have someone who will never veer from that path.

Thank you. And again, Happy 4th of July to you all.

God bless America. God bless Arizona.
